By starr campbell on Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 12:26 pm: Edit Post

Has anyone grown loofahs. i have had gourds every year, but this loofah is the first. It has taken over my backyard like the pumpkin vine from Hades. There is no fruit on it. My question is,,, is it like the pumpkin, having fruit in the Fall, or whould I just watch for the vine to come in my bedroom window and get me in my sleep. I love gourds and thought this would be a fun one to grow and grow it has. Any infor would be appreciated.

Well Starr, I do not know anything about gourd's. I have to much shade to grow them. I do know some people in the Texas Gourd Society. I belive I would contact them... I have listed a web-site and a e-mail address. Good Luck with the vine...(do you think that vine is the one JACK crawled up on??)

As a matter of fact, David, my preschool kids decided that Jack must be at the top of this vine because it goes up into the trees maybe 30 feet, but then they thought about the giant that falls down the vine and didn't want to go into the back yard. It took some talking to get them to play out there. Maybe you're right. I can't wait for the golden eggs, or the loofahs, whichever come first.

The thing finally started growing gourds, but they are not like any gourd I have seen. About 50 of them are in my trees. They are maybe two feet long and six or so inches around. I don't know how I will get them down if they don't fall down on my head. We may just put Christmas lights in the tree, but then it would be a scary Christmas.

Well don't forget to let them dry completely, before you use them....I would leave them out in the tree, untill we have a hard freeze and then bring them into the garage....(if you have a garage that BIG!!!!!!)

You could get in some great target practice while clipping them out with a 22
;-)
