I posted the August comestrollies out of sequence. This was actually the first one to run in the paper last month. Never mind – here’s this years version of flashy big hibiscus blooms for pots or borders, told as plant pets
Here's another hardy one, but I can't be sure of exactly what it is. Got it from Rays last year. Think he said it was a wild one from SW Texas/Mexico.
That one is really pretty. Also enjoyed the come stroll article and pictures. Wonder what happened to Daniel? He might know the name.
Maggie, it looks like one I have growing here in WV. But I don't know the name either - I bought mine in GA.
I love the little miniature flower on the end the pistil the first day the flower opens
Think D just called it their 'hardy hibiscus' that they had had around for years and said it reseeded around the place very freely.
I looked at pics of some indigenous to TX. None that I came across had blooms as refined as this. Since MK bought one at a nursery too, it may well be a cultivated named one. They weren't too big on names, were they ;-)
You're my kind of gardener MK, appreciating the little things in life
Here's mine from GA, now happily growing in WV. Think they look alike Maggie?
They look the same to me. Both lovely.
Judging by the heavy ribbed veins and leaf shape MK, your's appears to be the H. moscheutos with huge 6-9" flowers. I should have stated that the mystery bloom up there is around 3". It has a thicker petal and opens more flat than the mosch. But the bloom colors sure are close aren't they. Also, this one has the lobed, shield-shaped leaf, rather than the ovate one of the mosch, which isn't clear in my pic. Maybe I'll find one like it at a nursery one day - with a name tag!
That's neat to see your moscheutos is hardy up there in zone 5, Mk. That suggests it would survive your S. Yorkshire climate too Terry.
It will easily survive the winter Maggie, but our summers are usually too poor to get it to flower at all well.
How soon I forget :-}
