Maggies Garden Forum: Seasonal Chats: Field Stones(may be called Flag Stones )

I want to create a sitting area in the front of my house with wrought iron furniture placed on field stones, with the stones surrounding the entire area. Instead of grass or cement in between these stones, I have seen small purple flowers growing somewhat like a ground cover. Anyone know what they maybe called?

That is a lovely plan Betty. What area or type of climate are you in?

I am wondering if you are thinking of the low growing thymes or creeping campanula? - which would both require full sun and good drainage. Perhaps some of our regular forum-er cool-climate gardeners could recommend some other varieties. I believe there are wonderful alpines that would like such a site.

In my hot garden, the annual Portulaca rose moss has reseeded in between the cracks of our patio during the occasional heavy-rainfall springs. The family’s regular routes across the surface will kill off seedlings there, so that ‘paths’ occur across the patio between the blooms. It is lovely when that happens! When we stray off the 'paths', it is like tip-toeing thru the tulips, trying to avoid planticides ;-) as it doesn't tolerate foot traffic at all.
But, you've probably already realized that you can plan your heavy-traffic routes when planting the new starts.

In the Pacific NW thyme (different varieties have white, pink, or lavender flowers) and Corsican mint (has tiny lavender flowers) are used around stones. Both can stand light foot traffic.

Hi Betty, for spots where the traffic is not too bad how about a few tiny dianthus, most of the real miniatures will stand being stepped on from time to time when not in flower.
