I have a hillside on one side of my home and it is a real headache! We now have it planted with
some kind of evergreen (juniper maybe?) that creeps close to the ground. Trouble is, it's been
there for years and hasn't covered much area and
alot of it has died for some reason. I need a
suggestion on a fast growing groundcover that can
take full sun and that does not require too much
water. Any suggestions? Help! Carle
Hi Carle, The most commonly used plant for that purpose around here is Asian jasmine.
It spreads very quickly and is usually mowed or sheared with weedeater annually in late winter.
For something more interesting, consider this one too. It would not spread as fast as A jasmine in the first year, but each little plant will soon fill a 2-3 foot area in the second growing season.
I would toss a good layer of compost or composted manure over the area, leaving the old plants in place. Interplant them with the phlox to help hold the soil until the phlox fills in. It is found in nurseries in spring and fall,, needs good irrigating the first summer, but will survive on rainfall alone after that if need be.
I noticed Lowes was still stocking it this week, but most places cease carrying it after April.
