Does anyone know where I can obtain some oxblood lily (hippeastrum advenum)? I believe these are native, bloom in the late summer and are fairly short
Yes, I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have some......left over from the AOGC plant sale....Want some???? E-mail me........David
Thanks David,
I just looked up in Welch's "Garden Color Perennials" (which I should have done before writing) and I was mistaken. The lily I want is Rhodophiala bifida which is 10-12" tall. If memory serves, the plant you had got much larger.
My cottage garden is nearly full, but I can always make room for smaller uncommom plants.
Terri
Hello Terri, I know which bulb is which....I will start out again, with Yes, I have this bulb at home out side in a gallon container of R. bifida.....They were not growing, at the time of our Garden Show so I didn't take any of them there. I sold Bloodlily's at the show, but no Oxblood lily's....They will start blooming soon, so get them from me or someone soon.....
I would love to have some, David! I bought several of your Bloodlily's this year and am still looking for the perfect spot. Let me know when, where & how to purchase. I'm in Mansfield and my email is fmyers@ix.netcom.com.
I will send you a e-mail Terri....Talk to you soon....David
Am trying to find out about a plant I have. It is about 18-24 inches tall, has one bloom per year. Its stalk is light green spotted with darker marks. The pointed leaves grow on a stem which creates a circle, and are 'spear' shaped. The blossom is so dark purple its almost black. It looks similar to a Cala lily with a cylindrical upright bloom and a tall stamen (?) in its center. It blooms early and smells similar to rotting meat. I have been told it was a "Blood Lily" but anything I've found about that is not the same. Can anyone help??
Here ya go Charles,
I think you have a Dracunculus vulgaris, yes?
YES YES YES !!! That's it !! My neighbor has one against her garage. It is between our houses and gets only morning sunlight, as it is shaded by her apple tree and garage wall as the sun migrates to the west. Mine is against a chained link fence, and gets full sun !! I don't give it any special or extra care, its watered when it rains, or we happen to remember to throw a bucket of H2O at it late summer. But it comes back each year, smelling as atrocious as ever, but its such a unique color and interesting foliage I would love to propagate it from its own rhizomes this fall. Thanks so much for the proper name, I'll research this particular Dracunculus vulgaris, and make sure I treat it with better care and keeping!!.
PS>..you have a wonderful, entertaining and informative site here. Keep up the good works.
Thanks again !!.. Charles.
