Oh, pretty, pretty!

My first iris won't open for a couple more days yet. It's a really tall one, and has lots of blooms this year. I always have to keep my fingers crossed that the stiff winds we sometimes get this time of year won't knock them down!

SO GLAD to learn from your experience with the Dwarfs (reticulata). Sounds like they would almost have to be removed and then replanted each fall! I don't want them if they're that problematic.

So, I take it the dwarf bearded ones do OK. How big are they, and are they fairly easy to find? I just think it would be fun to have a mini. :o)

Very pretty! I especially like the blue - such a true blue. The surronding plants go so well with the iris. What is the yellow in the 1st picture?

I'm pleased you noticed the color combining MK :-) The burgundy bush in the back in Loropedlum. It isn't in its usual spring best, due to this year's late ice storm.
The burgundy-spotted yellow iris is a standard dwarf bearded named 'Bedazzled' that grows to about a foot tall.
I also have a dwarf purple that repeat blooms in fall - don't have the name. It came from our Organic Writer Gail Morris - yoohoo Gail.

There are also miniature dwarf ones too, that are only 6-8" tall. Those would be fun!

I occasionally see standard dwarfs in local nurseries Sandra, but better selections could be found through mailorder, or locally-owned nurseries could probably order some in for you.

My tall beardeds just started to open today. Let the colors begin!

I forgot to get back to this thread after the Bearded iris opened fully. James sent me this gorgeous blue one..

And I did manage to snap some pics of some Louisiana iris before they finished but only now remembered to post them.

Hi Maggie....I posted this message to another "thread" then found where it probably should have been posted so I will enter it again. At your urging, Dan and I spread mushroom compost. No problem. Then the last few days there is this "stuff" that seems to have covered the surface of the ground in places. As weird as it sounds..it looks like melted mushrooms ... stop laughing but truly that is exactly how it looks! I am sure it is some sort of fungal reaction but I am curious if you have had the pleasure of this oozing matter in your own garden.

Hi Leann, Your Mushroom Compost sounds great to me!!! It shows that it is indeed a LIVE and working.....What you see is just a little reaction to being spread out and it is breathing....What great stuff.....Good luck..

By Maggie on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 1:23 am: Edit Post

Maybe David is on to something there. Have you had it before David ?
I’ve used tons of the stuff without that ever happening here Leann, nor ever heard of anyone else having the same experience. Perhaps it is something in your soil or it may have come from a new plant introduction or has blown in recently, or came from the composted cow manure you applied at the same time. If so, it must really be loving the recent downpours and new-bed waterings. The mcompost is steam treated twice at extreme temperatures to kill fungi spores and such.

Try not to water around it and hope for no rain for a while. I suspect it will clear off soon with summer temps. If not, sounds like great fodder for a new horror movie. How bout...

And ,, no ,,, this is STILL not the mushroom compost thread :-O

By Leann on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 9:56 am: Edit Post

LOL....I know Maggie...I am trying to navigate without a lot of luck! Obviously, I am a slow learner!

By David on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 9:51 pm: Edit Post

I have had some rust looking fungus on top of the pile,I through out on my flowerbed's....The dryer the worse it was...the wetter the bed the stuff went away......I don't think it is anything to worry about.....If you want to spread some cornmeal on top to do away with the fungus...but I think that would be over kill....Just enjoy the experiment while it lasts....

By Maggie on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 10:04 pm: Edit Post

The suppliers said a white calcium will briefly leech to the top of the stuff, making a thin white layer, , but not a slimey muck. You folks sure have some weird things going on.
Would be interesting to see picies. I have pics I took several years ago of the oddities that arose when I would bring in composted stable stuff.,, Really neat fungi growths that never damaged any green plants and didn't return the following years.

I probably couldn't find the m compost thread either Leean , cause there probably isn't one. The subject, like the weird growths, just seems to occur randomly ;-)

Maggie, Do you recognize any of these iris as from your garden? I just about killed out the ones you sent me and a few others, but a quick transplant saved the plants and lost the nametags. Not unusual for me. You had sent me one named Prissy Missy that I want to be able to recognize since my dog's name is Missy.

iris yellow
This was the first year for this beauty to bloom for me. I almost gave it away thinking it was a different color that I have tons of. So glad that plant giveaway was delayed. :-) It was the first to bloom of the season, Last of May and kept on blooming into June.

iris trio
Can you get a look at these for identification? I didn't want to take up too much download time and space with individual pics.

Oh that yel and wht one! If they'd have asked me, I would have named it Lemon Meringue.

The pink one above is most def Prissy Missy. Doesn't it have the sweetest lavender cast to it.
The blue one looks a lot like my 'Babbling Brook', altho it usually has more ruffles. I don't think the purple is from me - I sure like its white beard.

By mamakane on Tuesday, July 01, 2003 - 8:57 am: Edit Post

Lemon Meringue! That's a great name for the yellow iris. I think I'll dub it that since I got it in a trade without a name. And I don't think you sent me any Babbling Brook but I do like that name too.

Thanks for the info on Prissy Missy, the pink one was my guess.

It was such a great year for Irises here. I especially enjoyed them since last year there was not one iris bloom due to a late frost June 1.

The yellow and white is heavenly! And the name you gave is perfect! I hope to have some one day but just got a few planted this year so I will be eager to see what I have come next year. I am so glad to have seen such beautiful specimens. Thanks for sharing.
