Hi David,
Be sure to confirm the cause of your withering-away St. A. There is a disease called 'St. Augustine Decline'. I have seen it eradicated within a few days with a new organic product that works great.

The mushroom compost really is magic. Spread it before laying the new sod. I did extensive research and interviews for a np cover story this spring. Talked with numerous folks who have used it long-term on every kind of gardening in the Metroplex - from azaleas and tomatoes, and from ranchers to farmers.

I spread it all over my yard in Feb. - beds and lawn. Couldn't believe the results. Had been using organic granular lawn food the last few years and am seeing even better results from the compost. Plus, I probably won't have to reapply it again for another 5 years. It is a case of feeding the soil, instead of just the plants.

The bulk suppliers I obtained mine from will be at the Arlington garden show tomorrow. They have changed their name to 'Advantage Compost' at

Ok...finally...Mushroom Compost thread...by Jove I think I've got it! What keeps throwing me is the length of time between posts on these things. But...with that being said..Maggie I hope you got the picture of the fungus among us. No more has popped up but that is just the weirdest stuff ever. Its like it is totally impervious to water. And it does look like melted mushrooms. As I said, Dan is convinced it comes from the Kow manture as opposed to the compost. Don't know how he made that determination exactly....other than he must know the scoop on poop!

Well, I’m glad someone found it for us :-)
It’s not that we haven’t talked about mc compost since this thread was first started, its just that all the other discussions on mc have ended up in the middle of other thread subjects. teehee

Now that you’ve opened it Leann, I’m finally able to post this pic in the right place. : )
zucchini
A local gardener harvested this zucchini 6 weeks after planting the seed in a bed topped with mushroom compost. It’s been at my house for a couple of weeks and the family keeps waiting for me to cook it up, but its been so fun sharing its story with others.

About navigating the forum threads Leann ,, all kidding aside, I must mention that there is a search engine on the navi bar to the right, under 'utilities'. And be sure to check the 'last week' button over there to pull up more recent posts.

Also, I forgot to respond to your ? about the weird white stuff. I have sent it on to a mc distributor to get their imput. They must also be rather mystified, as I haven't heard back yet.

A friend with huge warm greenhouse took lotsa cuttings from mine last fall,,they did great. YOU need to fill your bro's grnhouse with um this year, David. :-)

Terry's bout finished with his year-long programing that has kept him from joining us lately. He said the Yorkshire weather has been great ,,, making for good gardens this year and is hoping to update his site soon. Looking forward to that oxox

The scoop on the poop is that the suppliers took some to a specialist who deemed it an organism that lives in wood. Apparantly, the mushroom compost provides the perfect conditions for it to 'bloom', but this visable stage is short lived and harmless to green plants. If someone wanted to eliminate it, the recc was to apply baking soda on beds and Tide without bleach on lawn.
